Why generic web dev fails solar installers

How do you handle residential vs commercial solar buyer differences on one website?

Two distinct intake paths that share back-end infrastructure. The residential side leads with bill-upload, kW-size estimator, neighborhood-specific past projects, homeowner testimonials, financing options if applicable. The commercial side leads with capex / opex modeling, RFP-ready proposal flow, multi-quote-comparison-friendly content, reference site visits to past commercial installations.

Different homepage feature blocks depending on which segment you're prioritizing, usually residential leads in most Pakistani cities, but commercial EPC takes the lead in shop / clinic / office-dense areas like Saddar Karachi, Gulberg Lahore, Blue Area Islamabad.

Should we publish exact equipment brands publicly, or keep that for the proposal?

Publish them publicly. Hidden specs are the single most common reason serious Pakistani solar buyers eliminate an installer from the shortlist. Buyers research panel and inverter brands for weeks before they request a quote, and an installer whose website doesn't name brands looks like a panel shop reselling whatever cheap stock came in this week, not a serious EPC operation.

What works: publish your default equipment stack (the brands you install in 80%+ of jobs) on every system-type page, with per-component warranty terms. Reserve customization for the proposal: "we'll match the spec to your budget and roof, but our default is X Y Z and here's why." That respects customer autonomy while still signaling sophistication.

What's the right way to structure a past-project portfolio for solar?

Each project gets a structured entry with: system size in kW, location (neighborhood, not full address), equipment list (panel brand + model, inverter brand + model, battery if applicable), install date, photos (rooftop install, finished system, monitoring dashboard if customer permits), and output data where the customer has agreed to share it. Customer name optional and only with written consent.

Portfolio is filterable by kW range and city. A research-led buyer comparing installers wants to see "5 to 10 kW projects in DHA Lahore" not "150 projects across Pakistan in a long scroll." Filterable navigation is what turns the portfolio from decoration into a conversion mechanism.

Do we need a bill-upload feature, or is a contact form enough?

The bill-upload feature genuinely outperforms generic contact forms for solar. It does three things at once: (1) qualifies the lead by capturing actual usage data, (2) shows the visitor a rough system-size estimate before any human conversation (sets price expectations honestly), (3) signals professionalism on the first interaction. Installers who add it typically see substantially more qualified survey requests.

The trade-off: the bill-upload flow needs to handle bills from all major Pakistani DISCOs: IESCO, LESCO, K-Electric, MEPCO, SEPCO, FESCO, GEPCO, PESCO, QESCO. Each has a slightly different bill format. We build the OCR / kWh extraction to handle all of them; a fallback "I can't read this bill" path routes to WhatsApp with the bill photo attached. No bill-upload is a viable launch state, but the lift from adding it is meaningful enough that most installers add it within the first 3 months.

How long does a full solar installer website take to build?

Typical timelines: four to six weeks for a residential-led installer with 3-4 system-type pages, 10-20 past-project entries, and bill-upload quote flow. Six to ten weeks for a multi-system or commercial-EPC-led operation with both residential and commercial intake paths, deeper portfolio, and RFP-ready proposal infrastructure.

What slows projects down most often: waiting on past-project documentation (photos, equipment specs, install dates, customer permission for portfolio inclusion). How do you handle multi-system-size (5kW, 10kW, 15kW, 20kW etc.) without creating doorway pages?

A small number of thoroughly-written system-type pages, not many thin doorway pages. The right structure for most installers: one "Residential rooftop solar" pillar page that covers 5/10/15/20 kW residential systems together (with anchored sections per kW band), one "Commercial EPC" page, one "Hybrid + battery backup" page. That's three serious pages, each with full content depth, instead of fifteen thin pages each repeating the same content with different numbers.

Each section within a system-type page absorbs the kW-specific search intent ("5 kW solar Pakistan," "10 kW solar Lahore," "15 kW commercial solar Karachi") without creating duplicate-content risk. Google's spam systems are actively flagging the "one thin page per system size × city" approach that's common with Pakistani agencies. We don't go near that pattern.
